These are some of the issues and campaigns which matter most to me.
Politicians often define themselves in terms of the issues which are most important to them and the campaigns they run on behalf of local people. I have set out my views on a number of local and national issues and hope these will give you a clear idea of where I stand. For Conservatives, one of the most interesting problems is how to balance individual freedoms, which are part of our political heritage, and a strong law and order policy, which keeps communities safe.
Civil LibertiesOur traditional freedoms are under threat on many fronts, but I have not given up my belief that most British people instinctively know the value of liberty and freedom of speech. |
Law and OrderI believe that a much tougher policy is needed if we are to combat the rise in violent crime and antisocial behaviour. That is why I have made law and order one of my top priorities. |
Lower TaxesIn my view, lower taxes are better because, ultimately, individuals and families are better than Government at spending their own money, looking after each other, and helping charities. |
Military CovenantAlthough I voted against the Iraq War, we must not lose sight of our brave troops doing a fine job in Iraq and Afghanistan under difficult circumstances – or forget them once they return home. |
Our Local NHSLabour’s micromanagement of the health service has many failed patients. We need to set the NHS free from political interference, while still giving doctors and nurses the resources they need. |
The Traveller IssueIn 2003, I attempted to change the law through a Private Member’s Bill in the House of Commons. My Greenbelt Protection Bill introduced the twin-track approach I still believe is necessary. |
